What is bone grafting?
A bone graft is a medium placed between two vertebrae that are being fused during surgery. This medium can be one of or a combination of the following: bone putty, the patient’s autograft from their spine or hip, stem cells, or allograft from a donor. The patient will turn this graft into their own bone when they fuse. Nowadays, hip autograft from the patient is less frequently used because of chronic pain from this donor site, and because we get equally good fusion rates using donor allograft.
